I thought the premise sounded familiar.
The Sex Shuffle AKA Lucky At Cards is one of Block's great novels. It's really too bad that authors were basically forced to hide behind pseudonyms due to the content of their work.
By today's standards, the sex in the novel is tame.
And, while I'm sure that the story could have been told without the sex, it is, in my opinion, actually a necessary ingredient for Bill Maynard to get pulled into Joyce's web.
