Well, if you bury a piece of fruit, the pit has a chance to grow into a new tree.
It's obvious from his pose that he's looking for his shovel, and she's horrified by the realization that she left it out in the rain.
I think I read this book under the title "A Diet of Treacle." You know, same basic premise.
